the second serving from schmorgasbord brings together two relatively disparate and unrelated artists, but who both share a uniquely twisted approach to making music. s-max has been doing his thing for some time, running legendary home all things bizarre in house and techno, boogizm, and releasing a special kind of groove on labels such as telegraph, 7th city and karloff. his original track, >ms. rosen dub<, swaggers and sways with the spirit of classic yorkshire bleeps and bass. the groove is house, but the spirit of adventure is most definitely techno. his remix of spatials >corti< takes a very different approach, taking a rolling, jungle-like approach to dubstep and nailing it to the groove with stabbing bass notes. spatial leapt onto the bass music radar late 2008 with his shadowy infrasonics imprint, and quickly snapped heads with his crisp, refined approach to 2-step rhythms. since then he’s done things on his own terms, only releasing for himself and mutating his sound over a series of 10 inches. >corti< perfectly demonstrates spatials unconventional tendencies, lurching and buckling around a perfectly honed splatter of beats, off-centre synths and delirious vocal snippets. meanwhile on his remix of s-max, spatial flips the script once again with a stomping, swung techno angle that hammers the original into an uptempo, fist-pumping banger.

hardly strangers to the scene, daniel bortz & sascha silber give what could very well be the summer hit of 2011. the 2 track ep titled >color of love/fantasy< is incredibly effective in creating a smooth late summer feel, perfect for open air nights. straight kicks, crunchy snares, and pressed hi hats, a bassline bounces next to the deep kicks

if you were to cut neville watson he would bleed acid house, he would also quite likely knock you flat on your arse for having the temerity to wave a knife at him, but thats a whole other story. for his first wu contribution he ventures down the ethereal proto-house boulevard. jacking 707 patterns, a bouncing juno bassline and outer-space synth lines take you into the upper atmosphere for a glorious airborne joyride. as ever, neville manages to evoke those 85-89 feelings without ever sounding merely retro or like some kind of pastiche, something that many attempt but very few manage to pull off. over on side u apiento, the force behind the magisterially brilliant testpressing website, chips in with a heartfelt homage to the new beat sound. another testimony to the fact that a lower tempo doesnt have to mean diminished energy levels, the orange place simply oozes class from top to bottom. like some lost ancienne belgique classic it pounds and pumps along, building up the tension all the while until the quasi- eastern refrain lets loose half way thru and all of a sudden a mystic portal opens up in the space-time continuum that leads all the way to southwark street in late 87.

and are a duo living in manchester, uk. they have released a split 12 inch with 16 bit on mindset in 2009, the second 12 inch on black sun records that came out recently and a couple of 12 inches on horizontal ground. they sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. i selected three of those tracks to appear on this ep, ranging between 130 and 135 bpm. the -makeovers- project is a compilation of some of claudes best re-twists, some of which are so far removed they can almost be considered original works. this special edition vinyl includes one of the most sought after remixes, -warpaint- originally by pocket 808 in australia, vonstroke turned this into a late night anthem in 2007. played by techno djs, dubstep djs, and everyone in between this track was never cut to vinyl until now. on the flip side claude remixed the nublu orchestra out of new york. he was never completely happy with the original version of the remix and hes gone back and re-made it into a very special piece of music including a new vocal sample from his wife aundy who also did the vocal effects in whos afraid of detroit? this collection was put together with the theme that a remix can be an inspiring starting point for an entirely new piece of music. these are two of the deeper and darker remixes but we think you agree they are also very special.

the killer remixes from nick thayer, slynk & zamali will get you straight to the dance floore. nick did an amazing ghettofunk anthem out of it, with a rolling bass line and catching up the the funky gitare licks. slynk whiped the track up with a brass hook to bring back the late 60s funk feeling combined with his unique disco style. the last remix on this 12 inch is a great afro beat remix by zamali, to bring back the heat in the rhythm of the night.

having collaborated with hypercolours alex jones for art departments no.19 imprint as well as chalking up releases for sonat and mighty rumble, nxt has a solid reputation as a producer in addition to huge respect as a dj. productions and sets combine late-night grooves with a distinct sense of strangeness that makes for an always-interesting listen.

last year put leeds-based producer midlands (aka harry agius) name on the map with his successful collaboration with hessle audios ramadanman, >your words matter< on aus music. this year, aus label chief will saul has invited midland back to take a solo swing. its an excursion that explores the boundaries of 2-step, uk garage and techno and consists of two original tracks. on the a side >through motion< shows midlands ability to seamlessly take the spirit of uk garage and fuse it with techno. the tracks moody piano melody is punctured by a dark, pitch-shifted vocal and encircled by the warm atmospherics that have become his trademark. on the flip side is >shelter<, a brooding and cavernous affair whose vocals and whispery atmospherics make this the perfect late night tool.

the band celebrated their 25th anniversary by touring the world, which started in 2002 and concluded in 2003. they recorded their show in amsterdam and released it in late 2003. music on vinyl is proud to release this album for the first time on vinyl.
